In October, espnWs weekly essay series will focus on heroes.I dont remember when I first started running with my dad. There were the early-morning wake-ups to go skiing, the bike rides with strudel as the proverbial carrot and voyages in our inflatable boat that was called? The Challenger. Now, in my late 30s, its the running that has stuck. At 70, my dads pace has slowed, but hes still as religious -- compulsive, as he puts it -- about his running schedule.Every other day, in sun, fog, snow or sleet, my dad pulls on his running outfit -- a mixed-media affair that weve tried to update over the years -- turns on the morning news and begins his physical therapy routine that lasts for about 40 minutes. Then the soft knee braces go on. Followed by the running shoes, sunscreen, and his sweat-stained baseball hat, where the peaks of perspiration have created a mountain range of salt summits across the front.Eventually -- sometimes under duress, or his annoyed shouting from the road -- Ill head outside, and well be off.As we settle into rhythm, the chatting begins. Small talk is not his thing. Sometimes its politics. Elizabeth Warren was at a local fundraiser and was as impressive in person as she seems on television, my father explained. Sometimes its neighborhood news. A tourist had a dog on the beach but got comeuppance when the cops were called, he would retell me.More often than not, its my career. In fact, the trajectory of my adult life can be traced in jogs with my father, and not always fun ones.Among the first was when I was in the throes of a job that had dragged me under. As we rounded the corner of my parents street, the sound of gravel and sand underfoot, I defended my well-paid job as a celebrity reporter. We get in a certain track, my dad told me, professionally. If this wasnt the track I wanted, Id better move on.The toughest jog I ever took with my dad was a few years later, when I had found work, but was struggling. It was August, and steamy. Rivulets of sweat were rolling down my temples, my breath was easy, despite the heat. I couldnt talk to my dad?about how often I was crying alone.I didnt want another nudge to move back East where, my dad said, there was more opportunity. And more educated people. And family. Instead, I just kept moving in the thick summer air. We were on the sand now, bathed in sweat, at low tide.It was time to sprint past the Yankees flag planted in a neighbors yard -- another local affront, but a good end-of-run finish line. We ran hard and high-fived and congratulated ourselves.Six months later, we ran together again. The Santa Monica air was cool and dry, and the sky had that mix of blue and gray that California gets on winter days. We jogged up the tree-lined side streets to my local park, where you could make a few laps or cut them short. He was thrilled with it -- the picnicking families, the planes landing nearby, the bright bougainvillea draping the route like curtains. As we panted along, I told him that things were finally getting better. I was on medication that made me feel like myself again. I was freelancing on top of my day job, and best of all, I had ideas and plans and energy.Over the years, I stopped running on my own as often; between injuries and, frankly, boredom, I lost the will to trot myself around the pretty blocks of Santa Monica, which had begun to feel monotonous. I still made sure to pack my running gear every time I visited my parents. There is, in that repetition, not just a comfort, as I had always seen it, but a profound drive. Jogging isnt my fathers only habit: there is piano -- thats nightly, for two hours before dinner, not including lessons and recitals. And writing, on the mornings hes not jogging, and newspaper-reading, every day, after writing or jogging. At worst, my dads routine is an infuriating rigidity that has overridden all kinds of other things -- earlier dinnertimes, for starters. At best, its pure dedication, a devotion to making time to breathe and think. For me, its been the subconscious push to keep going when its cold and rainy, when Id rather stay in bed, and when theres a wrong turn and no end in sight.Whether my dads running habit is a function of a strong work ethic or a fanatical compulsion doesnt really matter. In a literal sense, jogging with him for 30 minutes every other day has been the comforting habit I get to come home to, no matter what season it is. Edgar Martinez Jersey . Barcelona also left injured defenders Carles Puyol, Javier Mascherano and Jordi Alba out of its squad for the trip to Glasgow. That means that Marc Bartra will probably start again in the centre of the defence alongside Gerard Pique. Ryon Healy Jersey . Jon Montgomerys gold medal in skeleton at the Whistler Sliding Centre and his subsequent auctioning off of a pitcher of beer in the village square elevated him to folk-hero status. DALLAS -- The bouncing puck helped the Dallas Stars end the Philadelphia Flyers long winning streak.Adam Cracknell scored the tiebreaking goal on a rebound early in the third period to lead the Stars to a 3-1 victory Saturday, snapping the Flyers 10-game win streak.Radek Faksa and Jordie Benn also scored for the Stars and Antti Niemi stopped 31 shots, including three during a Flyers power play in the closing minutes.Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov also hit a goalpost during the late power play for the second time in the third period. When we went down by one, we had confidence to make plays, Flyers coach Dave Hakstol said. We didnt get a positive bounce on any of those plays.I dont think I learned anything (about the team) through the winning streak. I think it was just a continuation of our group showing up and working hard.Cracknell broke a 1-1 tie at 2:27 of the third. Flyers goalie Steve Mason stopped a shot by John Klingberg, but the puck rebounded to Cracknells feet and he put it on his stick and sent a wrist shot into the net for his fourth. He really does the little things, said Ttker Seguin, who also had an assist on Cracknells goal. Hes always making smart plays.Benn, whose penalty gave Philadelphia its only power play with 2:58 left, scored into an empty net with 18 seconds to go.A week earlier, Philadelphia had come back from a 2-1 deficit with three power-play goals in the final 4 minutes. The Flyers lead the NHL with 28 goals with the man advantage. We learned from our last game in Philly that we had to keep that team off the power play, Cracknell said. We had a great kill, and then (Benn) ends up with the empty-netter to seal the game for us.Faksas fourth goal also was on a rebound. He assisted on Benns goal and played most of the penalty kill.(Faksa)s just become a big part of the team, Stars coach Lindy Ruff said. The kill was great.Tyler Leier scored his first NHL goal in the first period for the Flyers, also on a rebound. You look at (the first) three goals in the game, theyre all identical, Ruff said.Mason finished wwith 25 saves to end a personal eight-game winning streak.ddddddddddddNiemi improved to 7-2-1 at home this season, and 5-1 against Philadelphia in his career.Dallas entered the game ranking 29th in goals against average (3.11). In the last eight games, beginning with a shutout at Colorado, the Stars have gone 4-4 and allowed only 2.00 goals per game. When youre the worst in the league at goals against, something has to change, Ruff said. We made a big change going into Colorado, and since then I think its really helped our defense. With that has come some confidence. Since that point, we look like a team that can win every night.During the Flyers streak, they outscored opponents 36-22.Dallas also had only one power play, during which the short-handed Flyers had the only shot on goals. The games only two other penalties came 1:53 into the second when the Stars Jason Spezza and Flyers Brandon Manning went off for fighting. Each team had good scoring chances in the first period. The Flyers struck first with 3:16 left. Nick Cousins fired a wrist shot at Niemi from the top of the right faceoff. The goalie made the save but the puck went out to Leier, who wristed it in from just outside the paint.Dallas tied it at 4:48 of the second. Antoine Roussel shot from the left faceoff dot. Mason made the save, but the puck rebounded to Faksa in the slot and he buried a wrist shot.Game notes Dallas C Cody Eakin served the first game of a four-game suspension for charging Rangers G Henrik Lundqvist on Thursday. ... LW Curtis McKenzie returning after missing two games with an upper-body injury.... Leiers goal came in his 11th NHL game. He had his first assist on Wednesday at Colorado. ... The Flyers winning streak was their longest since a team-record 13-game streak from Oct. 19 to Nov. 11 in 1985.UP NEXTFlyers: Host Nashville on Monday night.Stars: Host St. Louis on Tuesday night in the fourth game of a five-game homestand.
